CONFORMABILITY

The ability of a pressure sensitive label to yield to the contours of a surface (curved or rough)

CROSS DIRECTION

The direction at right angles to the machine direction in the plane of a sheet of paper.

CURL

The tendency of paper by itself or in a laminate to bend or partly wrap around the axis of one of its directions.

DELAMINATION

The separation of a material into layers in a direction approximately parallel to the surface.

DIE

Any of various tools or devices used for imparting or cutting a desired shape form or finish to or from a material.

DIE-CUT

  • Top cut labels with a die.

  • The line of severance between a pressure sensitive label and its matrix or adjoining label made by the cutting edge of die.

ELONGATION

The increase in length of a material produced by extending it to the point of rupture.

EMBOSSED

A term applied to the face material of pressure sensitive labels that has printing or a design in raised relief.

FACE MATERIAL/BACKING MATERIAL

Any paper, film, fabric, laminated or foils material suitable for converting into pressure sensitive label stock.

FISH EYES

Round or eye-shaped deformations in a coating (adhesive, release, protective, etc.)

FLEXOGRAPHIC PRINTING

Formerly called aniline printing.  A method of rotary letterpress printing that employs flexible rubber plates and rapid-drying inks.

GLOSS

That property of a surface, which causes it to reflect light specularly.

HEAT RESISTANCE

The property of a material, which inhibits the occurrence of physical or chemical changes, caused by exposure to high temperatures.

LABEL

A slip of any material that can be affixed to anything, and indicating ownership, contents, directions, destination, rating etc.

LABEL, FACE-CUT

A die-cut label product from which the matrix has not been removed.

LABEL, FAN FOLDED

Pressure sensitive labels that are in a continuous form but are fan folded rather than rolled.

LABEL, LAID-OUT/DIE-CUT LABEL

Die-cut; pressure sensitive labels mounted on a release liner from which the matrix has been removed.

SELF ADHESIVE LABEL

A pressure sensitive (self adhesive) label product is a die-cut part that has been converted through roll fed production equipment utilising the type of pressure sensitive (self adhesive) material which has a protective backing.  The end product is produced in the form of either rolls, sheets, fan-fold, or by other techniques that produce like products, which have been slit or cut from the converted roll.

LABEL, PUNCHED-OUT

A pressure sensitive label, which has been die-cut through all components of the label, stock.

LABEL, ROLL

Pressure sensitive labels that are packaged in a continuous roll form.

LABEL, SHEET

Pressure sensitive labels that are packaged in sheets.

LABEL STOCK, PRESSURE SENSITIVE /SELF ADHESIVE LABEL STOCK

The combination of face material, pressure sensitive adhesive and release liner from which pressure sensitive labels are manufactured.

LABEL, TAMPERPROOF/DESTRUCTIBLE LABEL/NON-REMOVABLE LABEL

A class of pressure sensitive labels that cannot be removed from a substrate without damaging them in some manner, thus making their reuse impossible.

LABEL, TRANSPARENT

A pressure sensitive label whose face material, adhesive and protective coatings transmit light so that objects can be seen through it.

LINER, RELEASE /BACKING LINER/ RELEASE LINING

The component of the pressure sensitive label stock which functions as a carrier for the pressure sensitive label.  Prior to application, it protects the adhesive, and readily separates from the label immediately before the label is applied to its substrate.

MATRIX /WASTE

The pressure sensitive face material surrounding a pressure sensitive label, which is usually removed after die-cutting, thereby leaving laid-on labels on the release liner.
